Rezoning Plan in Katy to be Voted on Monday

Monday will be a big day for the residents of Katy, particularly for those Katy households zoned to Cinco Ranch, Seven Lakes, and Taylor high schools. The Katy independent School District school board will be meeting on Monday, February 22, 2010 to vote on a high school rezoning plan for the 2010-2011 school year. The rezoning will redistribute students among the three mentioned high schools, and is an effort to relieve overcrowding.

The two main issues of this plan to be discussed.

The first issue to be discussed involves which zones will be changed. There are 12 land use zones, parcels of land within subdivisions, which are being considered. The plan proposed could involve students moving from Seven Lakes to Cinco Ranch and students moving from Cinco Ranch to Taylor.

The second question that must be answered involves a grandfathering clause. The board must decide whether students currently enrolled that fall into the rezoned areas will be allowed to choose to voluntarily switch schools or stay at the school they are currently enrolled until graduation.

Which Katy homes will be affected?

The twelve land use zones affected by the proposed move are as follows:

Zones from Cinco Ranch to Taylor

  1. LUZ 66 – Highland Trails, Kelliwood Enclave, Kalliwood Gardens, Kelliwood Lakes, Kelliwood Place, Kelliwood Trails, Lake Forest, and Lakes of Buckingham
  2. LUZ 71A - Alexan Downs Apartments, Willow Park Greens, Kelliwood Pointe, and Kelliwood Terrace
  3. LUZ 71B – Meadow Ridge
  4. LUZ 71C – Park Hollow and Park View

Zones from Seven Lakes to Cinco Ranch

  1. LUZ 76C – Bayou Crossing
  2. LUZ 77A – Fairways at Kelliwood, Greens at Willowfork, Kelliwood Greens
  3. LUZ 77B – Arbor at Willowfork
  4. LUZ 79B – Canterbury Village, Meadow Glen, Residences at Cinco Ranch, South Park, and Summer Point
  5. LUZ 79C – Canyon Gate
  6. LUZ 79D – Estates at Willowfork Greens, Kelliwood Greens, and Kelliwood Park
  7. LUZ 79F – Saddlebrook Crossing
  8. LUZ 79G – Park Trace

It is a necessary move.

Under the current conditions some schools are experiencing overcrowding issues while others are under capacity. The high schools are built to hold approximately 3000 students, and without adjustments Seven Lakes would have hundreds of additional students attending, while Taylor would be significantly below the number of students it can accommodate.

We’ll keep you posted about the vote, which areas will be affected, and what it means for the residents of Katy and their children. For additional information you can also visit the district’s website.
