Katy Sees More Rain Thanks to Tropical Storm Hermine

Labor Day barbeques and last chance pool parties had to be put on hold for Katy and South Texas Residents thanks to the heavy rains brought to the area by Tropical Storm Hermine. This storm caught many residents by surprise, partly because it formed so quickly and partly because it formed over a holiday weekend. This storm was a great reminder that during hurricane season, and especially during the month of September, Gulf Coast residents must keep an eye on the weather and be prepared to act quickly.

Are you ready for a storm?

Keeping your hurricane kit stocked will help save you time and stress if and when a storm approaches. Some things you’ll want to keep on hand include:

• A battery operated radio

• A flashlight, or two, or three…

• Water: one gallon per day per person for 3-7 days

• Food: Again, 3-7 days worth of non perishable canned goods. Don’t forget a nonelectric can opener and some cooking tools and fuel.

• First Aid Kit: Include basic safety supplies, and remember to make sure you have a supply of prescription medication.

• Toiletries

• Special items for babies or the elderly

What about flood insurance?

Right before a storm is not the time to think about flood insurance. Flood policies cannot be written with an impending storm, and a flood policy will take 30 days to take effect. Tropical Storm Hermine is expected to dump heavy rain throughout Texas and north to Oklahoma and Kansas. Floods can occur anywhere you get rain, so don’t think it can’t happen to you.
