Cash for Caulkers

A new bill has passed the House and is awaiting a vote in the Senate. Dubbed “cash for caulkers”, a play on the cash for clunkers program from 2009, it is another infusion of stimulus money. This one would be tied to homeowners who seek to upgrade the energy efficiency of their homes. Rebates would be offered to those who invest in upgraded/added insulation and energy efficient window and doors.

This rebate would be separate from the $1500 energy tax credit that was previously offered. While supporters, mostly Democrats, argue that the program will move us toward a cleaner environment and add jobs by giving a slumping construction industry a shot in the arm, opponents suggest that the price tag is too high and that it just adds to an already overwhelming national debt.

Tax credits and stimulus packages seem to be the flavor of the month right now. We must remember that this is not “free money”. We are accumulating debt at a staggering rate, and as was proven by the latest recession, when you accumulate debt faster than you save you are heading for disaster.
